Excerpt: The tragic events of 11 September 2001 dramatically underscored the vulnerability of America?s borders and its transportation system to terrorism. In the wake of those tragedies, the Congress gave the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) a unique and historic opportunity to become a new kind of 21st-Century federal organization in this area of crucial importance to every American and the people of the world. As an agency of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), TSA is committed to building a safe and secure homeland. Our mission is to protect the nation?s transportation system?? a complex ?system of systems? comprised of aircraft, ships, and rail and motor vehicles; airports, seaports, and transshipment facilities; roads, railways, bridges, and pipelines; and supporting infrastructures??from terrorist attack and criminal activity. We have made it our responsibility to understand the magnitude of such pursuit, and maintain a heightened sense of urgency in all of our security operations. Americans depend on us and will continue to do so into the future.
